rich peoples homes
Rich people lived in rather large houses. They lived in a magnificent one storey house. In the centre of the house was the atrium, it contained a shallow pool (which was filled with rain water that entered through a small hole through the roof, this is also was where light entered throughout the day). There were many rooms, these included the master, children's and guest bedrooms. Many of the bedrooms contained beds, low tables and chairs/couches and cupboards. There was also a kitchen were the slaves prepared their meals. Small lamps which were made of pottery or bronze provided the light in the evening through to the night.
ordinary peoples homes
Poor or ordinary families would live in an insulae (apartments) contained 6-8 three-story apartments the ground floors were shops and they would cook their food in the courtyard behind the insulea. Insulaes were made of mud bricks and wood and usually collapsed or caught fire. There was never running water, heating and usually no toilets. An entitire family lived in 1-2 rooms. The top floor was the most dangerous so it was the cheapest to live in.
