clothes men wore
Picture:(from left to right) citizen, matron, curule magistrate, emperor, general, workman, slave
Roman slaves or workmen would usually a knee length tunic, which would have short sleeves or no sleeves; they would wear a wraparound over their tunic. It was like a wide robe that was dressed over your shoulder and was then carefull wrapped around the body.
Only, Roman men who were citizens were allowed to wear a toga. They would only wear a toga if they wanted to look smart. Togas were made out of white wool or white Egyptian linen. Togas were square/rectangular shape that was draped around the body. Tunics were always worn under a toga.
Coloured togas were worn for special occasions and to show how rich or important people were. Only the emperor was aloud to wear purple to show off how important he was (purple die was also very expensive back in its day).

clothes women wore
picture:(from left to right) stola and pella -all women wore the same.
Women would all wear a stola. A stola consisted of an inner and an outer tunic. Even slaves would wear one. Some stolas would consist of fancy pins or buttons to cover the seams. A stola would often consist if a palla, a palla was often a large oblong shawl and was worn outside. Women would wear a palla in many different ways, the most popular one was when it was thrown over the left shoulder from behind and then it would fall straight in front, and then it would rest as it was drawn around from the back and brought forward over or under their right arm.
A stola was to long to wear out, so they would usually use a piece of rope and lift the dress up and then tie it. this would not only lift up the dress but it would also support the womans breasts.
